CHRISTCHURCH.
RAILWAY GOODS TARIFF. THE NEW RAILWAY TARIFF DISLIKED. July 10. At a meeting of merchants and others held this afternoon, to discuss the new goods tariff on the Lyttelton and Christchurch Railway, a resolution was meved for petitioning the Minister for Public Works against the hardship and inconvenience of the present tariff. A lengthy discussion ensued, during which .an opinion was generally expressed that the meeting was premature, as the public had not had time to see how the tariff would work. It was ultimately resolved to adjourn the meeting for a fortnight. July 11.
Mrs. S. Ingle, of Melbourne, has been appointed lady principal of the Girls' High School,'and Miss Sophia Turrell (Wellington) and Miss Kate Edgar (Auckland) as assistants. An influential meeting of farmers was held at Lceston, on Monday last, to consider the railway tariff. It was resolved that as the old tariff' had paid well, and the new one would tend to decrease railway traffic, and prove an unnecessary tax on the public, the Government be requested to revert to the old tariff"; that the goods sheds should be let by tender, and that the Government be requested to consider the advisability of letting the whole of the railwavs.
