FIRE AT THE TOWN BOUNDARY.

INCENDIARISM SUSPECTED.

A four-roomed cottage belonging to Mr. William Collins, a labourer, and situated a little distance beyond the Town Boundary Railway-station, was totally destroyed by lire at an early hour this morning. From what v;e have been able to gather, the particulars are as follow : —As Mr. Ilislop was proceeding home, and when near ihe residence of Mi - . John Lemon, he noticed a bright glare in the direction of the Town Boundary. At first he did not pay much attention to the matter, but on turning round he found the affair had assumed a serious aspect. A bright blaze then met his view, and he at once rushed off to the scene. On reaching the burning building, he found it almost entirely in flames. He at once roused the owner of the house, who resides within a very short distance of the house destroyed. The fire had by this time obtained so great a hold upon the building that it was useless to attempt to save it, and the exertions of Mr. Ilislop and Mr. Collins were directed to preventing the lire spreading to the adjoining property, more particularly to a hedge which ran closely to other houses. Shortly afterwards a constable and one or two of the neighbours arrived on the scene, and by their united exertions the tire was confined to the one building. The house was unoccupied, and the cause of the fire is unknown, but incendiarism is suspected on the part of some person. The fire appears to have originated at the lee side of the building, as the fire burnt most furiously there. The building was entirely destroyed. It was, we learn, ininsured in the Trans-Atlantic Company for L2OO, and in the ISew Zealand for LIOO. It may be mentioned that about a fortnight ago a neighbour discovered a fire at the rear of the same house, amongst some rubbish. At that time a shed attached to the house was partly burned, and had to be removed to prevent the destruction of the main building. We understand that an inquiry I will be held into the matter. j
