EVACUATION OF MONTENEGRO

Sydney, July 4. The Herald's special, dated London, July 2, s;iys : —All accounts concur in stating that Russian operations in Armenia have been checked, the Turks displaying unwonted activity in that portion of their territory. The Russians admit they were defeated with heavy loss at Levin. The seige of Kars is not making much progress.

The Russians were repulsed at Batouni and d -iveii from their position.

The Turkish forc-js evacuated Montenegro after severe fighting, and enormous losses on both sides.

Belief of early peace is encouraged by the supineness of the Turks in the defence of the Danube. The Turkish fleet was quite inactive during the crossing of the river by the Russians.
