SUPREME COURT SITTINGS. July 3. In the Supreme Court to-day, in the perjury case arising out of the Ocean Mail disaster at the Chathams, Mr. Travers gave notice of his intention to demur to the indictment on the ground of informality of the proceedings at the Chatham Islands. Joseph Burgess, charged with stealing a watch, was sentenced to 12 months' imprisonment ; Matthew Kean, stealing money from a boarding-house, 12 months; Fred. Syanass, stealing a pair of boots, two years, two previous convictions having been proved against him ; James Kean, wife beating, 12 months ; E. S. Waller, stealing a, cash box, 12 months ; G. O. Morris, stealing from a Chinamen, 12 months. By the recent change in the police regulations, the members of the force are now enabled to have sixteen hours off duty at once. Mr. Morton Tavares and Miss Surtees make their debut to-night, before his Excellency the Governor. It is expected that Mr. O'Shea's estate will realise 10s. in the £, if the wool shipped Home is sold in a good market. After a searching investigation, at a meeting of his creditors, it was found that there had been no fraudulent preference on the part of the bankrupt towards his creditors.
