CHRISTCHURCH.

WHITE'S FUNERAL. CUSTOMS DUTIES.

LATE FIRE AT LYTTELTON. July 2. The funeral of Mr. Frederick White, who was stabbed by an inmate of the Lunatic Asylum last week, took place yesterday, and was attended by over 400 persons. The criminal sessions of the Supreme Court opened to-day, with a light calendar. Judge Johnston's charge was very short. He said that though the calendar was light, it was, considering the population and prosperity of the country, quite heavy enough. A Coursing Match took place to-day, and the sport was very good. June 3.

The Customs duties collected during the past quarter amounted to L48,!)38 ; while that for the corresponding quarter of Jast year was L 44,312. The merchants who lost produce by the late fire at the export shed, Lyttelton, a short time ago, intend proceeding against the Government for damages. Counsel have been retained, and the mercantile community are to be asked to subscribe towards the expenses. The police were sworn in under the new regulations yesterday. Six men declined to be sworn. Great dissatisfaction exists among the police at the new state of things, and if the swearing; had taken place during the summer, a larger number of men would have refused further service.
