T. W. Hislop and S. E. Shrimski, Esqs., M.H.E's., met the Otepopo Eoad Board yesterday afternoon for the purpose of conferring with them in reference to the jtroposed Hew General Eoad Boards Act, and other matters of importance likely to be dealt -with during the forthcoming session. The Board was unanimous in the opinion that County Councils were far more expensive than useful, that they should be abolished, and that increased powers should be ra ted to Eoad Boards. As a substitute ii?. County Councils, it was suggested, and generally agreed, that a Board of Works such as that proposed by the Opposition last session would be less expensive and more effective. Dissatisfaction was unanimously expressed at the present system of what is termed local self government, with all its useless expenditure and intricacy. It was decided that their representatives should meet them again prior to their departure for Wellington.
Sub-Inspector Smith, who is also a witness in the case of larceny against Craig. During Mr. Smith's absence Sergeant Bullen, from Palmerston, will have charge of the Police Force in this district.
The inhospitable character of our country railway stations must have impressed itself upon the minds and bodies of all railway travellers. During the winter months the chilly atmosphere in the carriages penetrates through and through one's physical nature, and the same may be said of the stations, where people are compelled to " shiver and to wait." If there happens to be a ladies' waiting-room, that is well; but, in any case the gentlemen must remain on the platform, or seek a very questionable kind of shelter in a draughty recess. Under such circumstances a little refreshment would be not only pleasant but beneticial. We are quite aware that it would not pay persons to devote their whole attention to providing refreshment at these country railway stations, but we think that tea, coffee, and chocolate, with sandwiches, could be supplied by the station-master. We cannot see any objection to this, and throw out the suggestion iu the hope that if practicable it will be attended to.
There was no business done at the Kesident Magistrate's Court this morning. The monthly meeting of the North Otago Benevolent Society will be held at Mr. Church's office on Monday evening, at seven o'clock.
A speci?l meet : ng of the Municipal Council will take place on Monday evening at. 7.15 o'clock, for the purpose of receiving aud considering applications for Registration of boarding-houses under the Common Lodging Plouses Ordinances. Lodging-house keepers would do well to send in their applications at once. Up to n\e o'clock to-day 14 applications had beei received foi' registration.
We understand the fine LlO imposed on John Morgan at the Resident Magistrate's Court on Thursday, for assaulting Mr. Johns f the bailiff, has been paid, and that sureties, have been foi incoming for Morgan's future good behaviour. The Public Baths Company call for tenders for the construction of the baths on a reduced scale, the plans for which may be seen at Mr. Glass' oltlce. Tenders must be sent in on or before Thursday next.
We would remind ratepayers that they can now obtain cojjies of the Citizens' Roll. It is notified elsewhere that all persons whose names have been accidentally omitted, or who, owing to non-payment of their rates in due time, have been excluded from such Roll, may pay their rates, and lodge with the Town Clerk on or before Tuesday, writjen claims for admission to the Roll; and.any objections to names already enrolled may be similarly lodged before Thursday next. The first half-yearly meeting of the Dunedin Co-operative Store Company was held last night. The receipts for the half-year were L 3054, and the expenditure L 2942. The liabilities were LIBS 7, the assets LIS3I. Two Good Templars made themselves conspicuous at the meeting. It appears that repeated promises had been given by the Good Templar bodies to assist the Cooperative Store, providing no bottle license was obtained for it. The promise of support was not rendered, only two Good Templars responding to the circular which had been sent to them to become shareholders in the company. The directors of the company re ently obtained a bottle license, and now two or three Good Templar shareholders are protesting against it.
