THE RUSSIANS CROSS THE DANUBE. WELL RECEIVED BY CHRISTIANS. REPULSE OF THE RUSSIANS AT KARS. Wellington, June 27. The Government have received the following cable message : London, June 25, 4.45 p.m. The Russians crossed the Danube at Galatz, and hold Matchin, after a slight loss. They were well received by the Christian inhabitants. Kars still holds out, the Russians having been repulsed with great loss in the last attack. The Emperor is with the Russian troops at Ploiesti. The Montenegrins are still resisting, although they were defeated after killing 7,000 Turks. Gortschakoff assures Earl Derby that the Suez Canal is to be respected as international, and that Constantinople is not to be occupied by the Russians or any other European Power if conquered, but is to be a free city, and its future occupation by any European Power is to be subsequently arranged.
