THE FLOODS. LOCAL OPTION BILL. FREE AND COMPULSORY EDUCATION. June 15. Further reports from the country district s show that considerable damage has been done by the floods. Part of the Albury Branch Railway line, Timaru District, has again suffered severely, and will be closed for some months.
A public meeting re Local Option Licensing Bill was held last night. The weather was very wet, and there was consequently only a small attendance. The principal speakers were the Primate of New Zealand, the Rev. H. C. M. "Wat son, and Mr. Stout, M.H.R. Several resolutions were unanimously carried, the principal one being—" That, in the opinion of this meeting, the principle embodied in the Local Option Bill is equitable and practicable, and likely to afford the public relief from many of the evils resulting from the consumption of intoxicating liquors." At a conference of school committees last night, resolutions were carried in favor of free and compulsory education, the establishment of secondary schools, and larger powers being granted to committees. Tiie weather is still wet.
