JUDGE RICHMOND ON DRINK AND CRIME! June 14. In the course of a civil action, Winter v. Schultze, for malicious prosecution, Mr. Justice Richmond, in allusion to evidence regarding an evening spent by the parties in various public-houses, said no doubt there was a ludicrous side to such disclosures, but a very different aspect lies not far off. He was shocked at the picture of Colonial life such facts presented. "I do not speak," he said, "as a teetotaller, or Good Templar, but as a Judge of the Supreme Court, occupied day after day on criminal cases caused almost entirely through drink. Three-fourths of our business on the criminal side, and a great many civil c ases, are directly attributable to drink, and I am saddened on reflecting what this state of society discloses."
