THE EVENING MAIL. FRIDAY, JUNE 15, 1877.

A meeting of the Oamaru-Naseby Railway Committee will be held at 1 o'clock to-mor-row afternoon in the County Council Chambers. Messrs. Fleming and Hedley s sale of piano, stationery, books, fancy goods, &c. on the premises lately occupied by Mr. Carncross, will take place to-morrow, at 12 o'clock. A somewhat serious affray took place on board the brig Wave yesterday, the particulars of which did not reach us until too late for insertion in our last issue. It appears that a dispute in reference to the loss overboard of a bucket took place between two sailors named James Thomson and William Waddell. During this, Thomson struck

Waddell over the face with his hand, in which he had a large sheath knife at the time. The knife entered Wadduli's cheek, a:.'l inflicted a severe gash. He was at once sent ashore, and had the wound sewn up by Dr. Fleming. The matter came before the Resident Magistrate's Court to-day, when three witnesses, including the prosecutor, expressed iheir belief that Thomson had not intended to cut Waddell, but had forgotten during his passion that he had the knife in his hanc l . It was fortunate for him that the witnesses did take that view of the matter, for had it been otherwise, the case mk'ht have had a more serious ending than it had. His Worshij), in giving his decision, said he would give the accused the benefit of the doubt with reference to his intention to wound the prosecutor, and let him off with a fiue of L 6, his Worship at the sains time

making an order for half the fine to go to Waddell. A match will be played by the Football Club to-morrow afternoon between 10 of the team that played against Dunedin, and the next 18 members of the Club. The following are the names of the players :—For the team : Walls, Booth, Caverhill, M'Glashan, Finch, Thompson, Bishoj), Blackburne, Corliss, Hickey. Next IS : Holdsworth, Wait, Hervey, Otterson, M'Donald, Tempest, G. Fenwick, Honour, Rice, Church, Baxter, Davies, Rhodes, A. Hardy, Filluel .rn-

cross, Kerr, Grenfell. Emergencies : Crawford, "Waters, Gow, Hardy. Players are requested to be on the ground punctually at 2.30.

Despite the wretched weather last evening, there was a very fair attendance at the Masonic Hall, the performance being under the patronage of the Oamaru Volunteers, some half-dozen of whom appeared in full uniform. The extravaganza of "Cinderella'" and the pantomime were again gone t.irough with great success. The tricks of the Clown (Mr. Hall) and Pantaloon (Mr. Wilkinson) caused roars of laughter, and the dancing of the Columbine (Miss Bessie Vivian) and Harlequin (Mr. Hooper) elicited considerable applause. The patomime will-be repeated this evening, when the prices of admission will be reduced. To-morrow afternoon there will be a mid-day performance of the pantomime for the especial benefit of the juveniles, the admission to which is fixed at a very reasonAble rate.

We remind intending tenderers for the Oamaru Baths that the time for receiving tenders will expire to-morrow.

The poll in connection with the election of members of the Waitaki Road Board tookplace yesterday. There were only two Subdivisions in which the ballot was necessary. In the Weymouth Sub-division the polling took place at the Pukeuri school-house, the result being as follows :—Mr. Thos. Duncan, 35 ; Mr. Wm. Dennison, 16. The old member of the Board (Mr. Duncan) was therefore re-elected. For the disputed seat for the Papakaio Sub-division the poll took place in the school-house, Papakaio, and resulted in the return of Mr. Aitchison, who obtained 44 votes against the 28 of the retiring member, Mr. D. Borne.
