WAITAKI COUNTY COUNCIL.
The following ia the conclusion of our report of the meeting of the County Council yesterday:— EOAI> THROUGH PAPAKAIO PRE-EMPTIVE. A letter was read from the Waitaki Road Board, asking the Council to reconsider its decision re the taking over of the road through Papakaio Pre-emptive. A lengthy discussion took place, during which three different motions were duly proposed, seconded, and negatived, the matter being left in precisely the same position as before. TENDERS FOR MAINTENANCE OF COUNTY ROADS. A large number of tenders for maintenance of County roads, were opened and considered. The following is a list of those accepted : Section No. I—Hampdenl—Hampden Riding—From County Boundary on Horse Range to Jloeraki Jetty, Hector M'Leod, L 9 3s per month.
Section No. 2—From junction of Port Moeraki road to boundary of Riding at "Waianakarua River, Gilbert Green, L 5 10s per month. Section No. 3—Otepopo Riding—From "Waianakarua River to Island Stream, and branch road leading to Maheno Railwaystation. No tender accepted—to be carried on by day labour. Section No. 4 —-Kakanui Riding—From Island Stream to Oamaru town boundary, Martin L-mnan, L 8 12s 6d per month. Section No. s—Papakaio Riding—From Oamaru town boundary to junction of road at Section 10, Block 11., Papakaio District, John Maloney, L 5 per month. Section No. G—From Pukeuri Point to Waitaki Bridge, C. Shine, L 3 3s per month. Section No. 7—From junction of roads I at Section 10, Block IL, to boundary of Riding west side of Block 1., Awamoko District, Cartwright and Bayley, L 9 8s per month.
Section «o. B—Awamoko Riding—From boundary o f Papakaio Hiding to Duntroon. thence to Maerewhenua Township. No tender accepted ; to be maintained by day work when required. Section No. 9—Otekaike—From junction of roads at Duntroon to junction of the roads leading to Hille's Ferry, T. P. Wright, L 9 10s per month Section No. 10—From junction of Ferryroad to Munroe's Hotel, W. B. Cairns, L9O for the nine months. Section No. 11—Otamatakau Riding— From Munroe's Hotel to Grant's Accomj modation-house, Omarmaa, Joim Richmond. L 9 per month. Sec:; ;i No. 12—Ohau Riding—From Grant's Accommodation-house to County Bou!i>l">'v on Lindis Saddle, John Richinorv' .',' per month. (Vvrrjict No. 2—Repairs to Kakanui i'ri L'--- Piers, on Main South Road, David il-r..":.. ISO. Contact No. s—Supplys—Supply of 1500 cubic yards of road metal between Oamaru Town Boundary and District Road at White Rocks, Barnabas Battersby, 6s 9d per yard. Contract No. G—Building Four (4) New Culverts on Port Moeraki Road. No tenier accepted; frc-sh tenders to be called for wooden culverts. Contract No. 7—Formation of Road roni Awamoko Creek to Mr. P. Aitchenn'3 Farm (about 160 chains). T. P. Wright and Co. 's tender was conditionally iccepted. Contract No. B—Forming and Gravelng about 7 Chains Road leading from Jain Road to Maheno Railway-station, lonsideration of this work was postponed -tenderers' deposits in the meantime to e returned. GRANTS TO MECHANICS* INSTITUTE. Mr. Muecott, in accordance with ntice, moved, " That the sum of L2O be ited respectively to the Mechanics' Inititte, Hampden, and to the Athennins at Herbert and Kakanui." Mr. Craig seconded the motion. Mr. B*. Sutherland moved as an nendment, that no money should be exuded as proposed. Mr. Johnston seconded the amend- ] ent. On the question being put, Messrs. nrcott, Craig, and Wheatley voted for ( e motion, and Messrs. Johnston, Todd, 1 • Sutherland, D. Sutherland, and the 1 Airman against it. INSPECTOR'S REPORT. A lengthy report from the Inspector of Roads for the month ended 31st May was read and considered. A recommendation that the surface men employed on the roads in the Ohau and Otamatakau Ridings should be discharged was agreed to, the men to be paid off as soon as the work was completed. The portions of the report referring to the Otekaike and Awamoko Ridings were approved of. The consideration of a number of suggestions in reference to works to be performed in several Ridings was postponed until next meeting. CAVE VALLEY POUND-KEEPER. The following letter from Messrs. Julius and Balmer was read : *' Oamaru, Otago, N.Z., 11 June 14, 1877. " The Chairman, County Council—- " Sir,—Mr. Granger, some time since, sent in his resignation as Ponnd-keeper at Cave Valley to the Road Board, and was referred to the County Council, by whom he was referred to the Resident Minister, who, in reply, states that he cannot interfere in the matter, as the Council have the control and disposition of all proceeds in the County. " We are, &c, "Julius and Balmer."

It was moved by Mr. Purcell, and seconded by Mr. Craig, " That the Inspector of Works report to the Council at its next meeting the probable cost of diverting the Main Northern Road at Trotter's Creek with a view of action being taken thereon." Carried. Mr. Craig moved, "That Messrs. Wheatley, Barron, and the Clerk be empowered to procure levels and staff at a cost of not exceeding L 20." Carried. NOTICE OF MOTION. Mr. Todd gave notice that he would move at next meeting of the Council, "That certain roads in the Waiareka Riding be proclaimed County roads, viz., No. 1, Main District Road, extending from junction with Main South Road, near Oamaru town boundary, to northern boundary of the Riding in block 11., Maerewhenua ; No. 2, Main District Road, extending from Junction with Main District Road No. 1 at Whitstone, to western boundary of Riding in block X., Kauroo."
POINTING. Mr. Murcott moved, and it was resolved, "That Messrs. Sutherland and Wheatley be appoiuted a Committee to make enquiries as to the general cost of printing, and see what can be done in makingji deduction from the prices now charged" OFFICE FITTINGS. Messrs. Wheatley and Sutherland were empowered to obtain office fittings, &c, and ascertain the cost of putting on gas to Council rooms, with power to act. ACCOUNTS. Accounts were passed to the amount of L 682 10s., and the Council then adjourned till next month.
