ORIGINAL CORRESPONDENCE.

[We wish it to be most distinctly understood that we are not responsible for the opinions expressed by our correspondents. ]

TO THE EDITOR OF THE EVENING MAIL. Sir, —Would you be good enough to insert the following explanation in this evening's paper.—l have, &c, A. Hesketh.

"Mr. Hesketh, Sir, —You have asked me to state why in my statement to the Harbour Board Committee with reference to your conversation with me about the letter signed ' Venice Preserved,' I added that you were sober at the time. In rep?y, I have to say that you having stated that you did not remember the conversation, I desired to make it clear that the lapse of memory on.your part was not due to your being unaware of what you were saying at tho time the conversation took place. I did not at all mean to imply that you were in the habit of getting under the influence of drink. " Yours truly, (signed) "W. J. Steward. " Oamam, June 4, 1877."
