NATIVE LANDS BILL.
Auckland, June 1,
During the recent visit of the Attorney- | General, the new Native Lands Bill was finally settled. Mr. Whitaker's proposals were accepted almost without objection. The Act of 1873 is to be repealed altogether, and the general scheme is to return to the policy of 1865, with amendments suggested by experience. The Government evacuate the land market, and leaves speculation to the public. Certificates are to be issued to owners, and they may sell or lease to whom they please at once. Mortgages are forbidden. The I
general idea of the Bill is nbsold dom to the Maori in territorial f J absolute freedom of land froJg ment interference. The dutyv| per cent, ad valorem.
