GOVERNMENT JUSTIFICATION -
May 31.
In reference to complaints re the nonpayment by the General Government of subsidies to the Counties' Road Boards and Boroughs, it appears that in the Provincial district of Auckland alone, 12 Counties, 119 Road Boards, and 2 Boroughs have been paid, and that the remaining 10 [Road Boards and Counties have not been paid as yet because they failed to furnish those complete returns without which the subsidies cannot legally be handed over. The same applies to other districts.
