The nomination of candidates for the seat in the County Council for the AYaiareka Hiding, rendered vacant by the resignation of Mr. William Young, took place at noon to-day, at the Cave Valley schoolhouse, Mr. Martin being the Returning Officer. Very little interest was manifested in the affair, their being only four persons present. Z\lr. Cornelius Todd was the candidate nominated, his proposer and seconder being Messrs. Angus M'Xaughton and Robert Patcrson respectively. Mr. Todd was, of course, duly elected. AVe would remind our readers that the annual Court for the revision of the Electoral ■Roll for the AVaitaki district -will be held at the Resident Magistrate's Court on Monday, at 10 o'clock. An accident occurred this afternoon to the largo crane at present being used for lifting ihe lai-ge blocks of stone at the new Colonial Bank. The men were in the act of lifting a heavy stone, 'when, owing to some unexplained cause, the jib came down with a crash. It was broken into two by the fall,, and some damage was also done to the portion of the building already completed. It was fortunate that none of the men were under the jib when it fell, for, had there been, the accident might have been attended with fatal results. His i:":;ceUeiicy the Coventor has accepted the resignation of the commission held by Captain L. Morton, of the Oamaru Citizen Cadets. 2>Tr. B. P. A General Government Gazette .just to hand bristles with resignations of officers ; while no less .than four companies of volunteers have been disbanded, three of which are in Wellington Province. The Taranaki Light Horse-Volunteers, the Wainuiomata Rifle Volunteers, the Canterton Kifle Volunteers,. and the Masterton Rifle Volunteers. What is the meaning of all this ■'! Is there a prospect of some fighting to be done ? We understand that Oamaru is to have a visit from Mr. J. L. Hall's Comedy and Burlesque Compary, which is at present playing at the Gaiety Theatre, Christchurch. The Masonic Hall has been engaged by the business manager of the troupe for a week, commencing on the Bth June. The Company is a very good one, more particularly in regard to the representation of burlescpies, in which Johnny Hall, as he is familiarly called, is a host in himself. The p>eoi>le of . Oamaru may therefore look forward to the appearance of the Company with some degree of pleasure.
