Wa are thankful fco our morning coiitemporary fur tiie friendly manner in which it speaks of our article in reference to the proposed exchange of the present gaol site for anther piece of land, to be provided by the Corporation. Wo are also obliged to our contemporary for having called attention to one or two matters which escaped our notice when writing our article yesterday. From what we stated, it might be inferred that the idea of asking the Government to make the proposed exchange originated with the present members of the House of Representatives for this district. We had no intention of affirming any such thing, our reason fur mentioning the action taken by them being, as we stated, merely to show that the idea was no new-fangled notion,

and that it had been thoroughly considered by others besides his Worship the Mayor. Our contemporary, in justice to the gentlemen who preceded the present members for Waitaki, says that, "in 1875, when ' The Oamaru Town Hall, and Gasworks Sites, and Municipal Reserves Bill " was brought in by him, and carried through the House, the exchange now proposed was suggested by him, and formed the subject of more than one inferview with members of the Ministry, and it was only because he feared that the Bill would appear too large in its provisions that Mr. Stewakd did not proceed with the proposal that session." Our contemporary also quotes from speeches delivered by that gentleman on the occasion of the nomination for the Mayoralty, and when taking the Mayoral chair, to show that the idea was never abandoned by him. We are glad to have had the opportunity of adding this much to the information published by us yesterday, more especially as we are believers in the pi-inciple of bestowing honour upon whom honour is due.
