WAIAREKA ROAD BOARD.
The monthly meeting of the above Board was held to-day, when there were present—Messrs. J. Reid (in the chair), J. T. Evans, Meek, Jackson, Paulin, Menlove, and Major Evans. The minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed, and the outward correspondence read and approved of. Mr. T. C. Duncan, the Assistant Engineer, wrote, in reply to a former letter, stating that the contractor for the Waiareka Railway had been instructed to substitute cattle hops for the gates on the district road in section 9, block VII., Awamoko.
The offer of Messrs. Cameron and Hunter to fence the road line through sections 48, 49, and 50, block VIII., Awamoko, at 19s. per chain, was accepted. The resignation by Mr. William Young, of his seat as a member of the Board, was accepted. The plans and specifications for improving two portions of the road between the Teaneraki mill and the Junction of Gillies and Streets roads' were considered ; but it was decided to let the matter stand over for the present; and that the Chairman of the County Council should be applied for information in reference to the intention of the County Council to expend the rate raised in the Riding upon the roads within its boundaries, the Board being of opinion that it is desirable, if such is the case, that the expenditure should be made upon roads indicated by the Board. A number of tenders for the construction of three wooden bridges—two across the Waiareka River, and the other across the Big Hill Creek —were opened ; but it was resolved to let their consideration stand over for the present. Mr. Evans moved, and Major Evans seconded, " That the Clerk write to the Government, asking for information in detail on the subsidy paid and payable on rates collected in Waiareka district for the year ending March, 1877." Carried. The Inspector reported that the culvert and other works on the road through Messrs. Gillies and Street's property had been attended to, and that a culvert on the main district road had been inserted as instructed. He also suggested that some road metal should be obtained for the repair of the crossings at the railway, as they were in bad repair. On the motion of Mr. Evans, that the Engineer should call the attention of the Government to the state of the crossings, The Engineer reported having inspected the bridge over the railway at the tollgate, and recommended that it should re-
ceive another layer of planking, in order to make it safe for heavy traffic.—lt was decided that the Clerk should call the attention of Mr. Lowe, the JResident Engineer, to the unsatisfactory state of the bridge decking. The matter of the crossing on the Big Hill Creek, in the Windsor sub-division,
and leading to the coal-pit road, was referred to the Engineer. The Clerk was directed to call the attention of the Road Inspector to the rate of wages paid to the daymen, and in. timate that on and after the Ist May the amount will in no case be more than 7s, per day. Accounts to the amount of Ll*9 14s. lOd. having been passed, the meeting terminated with the usual compliment to the chairman. j
