A 9Saptd error in ottr leader yesterday made tfc? speak of the Governor as the ot twj&Hip. Of course, it should have been the representative of VQijrtU'J* A special meeting of the Municipal Council! wm held yesterday, but as the proeccd-iug-j were condrteted in Committee, tlie l*res:j were e set tided. It is. however, understood that the principal item under con. siderattotJ waa the sate of the gisworks loan, -wdueh. we tiettsve, has baen pbccl at a satisfactory figure. Messrs. Lee:.; and Moore announce that they are no w boiling down a number of firstclass half-bred wethers, and are prepared to sell leg* of mutton at one shilling each.
A very successful quadrille assembly started last night in the Volunteer Hall, and those present tripped right merrily to the excellent music provided by Mr. Earle. As the winter nights are now on us there is no doubt this assembly will be well patronised by those who delight in the mazy waltz.
At the annual meeting of the subscriber.-; to the Mechanic-*' Institute last evening, it was decided to take steps to have the name of the Institute changed to the Oamaru Athena 1 tun and Mechanics' Institute. The balance-sheet showed a slight deficiency, although or a more cncou-aging nature than its |»rcil-"?:-s-«Ts. It is a matter of regret that the Institute is not better supported by tin people of Oamaru, more especially by the up; er <-h-s. v.ito thould make it their duty to induce people to t;.ke a livelier interest in literature. We understand that it is intended to get up a scries of entertainments tn aid of the fund* of the Institute, and that a ia-"e number of gentl.-mcn have already vidu»fc-'cre,l their services in its behalf.
It i-" our pahiful duty to record a most disin" accident, which occurred shortly after v-'c we:it to press yesterday, and by which :t iitti : 1> >y. of between four and five vcar.-i oi" a-.';-, the s< n of Mr. Michael Collins, labourer.
