Mr. W. seems fco trive- be ti n»ore of a persona! natri'-c than- of arty ve-y poUtval White* thfr defeated c-tndidafe may htvc turned ortS n thnro:tgVg'->ir:g supporter of the present Ministry. Mr. Trovers has simply confined himself to saying that he will not oppose the Government. In Mr. Travcrs the House has revived a very cou-idsrabte : amount of strength. for. al* hough ha cannot fie termed an eloquent speaker, like all lawyers, he has the "gift of the gab," and « s possessed of a f.'.ir amount of good common sense and practical knowledge. both of which cannot fail to be of benefit to the representative chamber. Ho has also the advantage of not being a raw recruit, having previously occupied a seat in the Hou->o of Representatives. Though, perhaps, tie is not altogether to he retted upon in cases of emergency, he is a man capable of forming opinions of his own. The police have eanght one of the petty thit.'-v who are in the habit of prowling about tents and outhouses, stealing everything they can lay their hands upon. It will l>e by the report of the Magistrate's Court that a man named .lamea Brennan was sentenced to one month's imprisonment, with hard labour. It is to b«j hoped that this case will prove a salutary warning to others who are in the habit of pilfering other people's property. A meeting of the Oamant School Com" mittee will be held at the Secretary* office on Monday evening next, at 7.3J1 o'clock. The principal business to be brought forward, we believe, will be in reference to the appointment of the new third and fourth masters. A rumour was current in town last evening that a drunken row had resulted in venr serious consequences, and that one of the men engaged in it had had his back broken or his spine very serittsly injured. On making iuqtttries into the matter, we have learned that, although a row did] take place, the injuries done to the man in question were not of so serious a nature as was reported. The facts of the case, we believe, are simply these r Four men named. Davis, Hyde, Hudson, and Telier, were driving into town from Ngapara, and white doing so a dispute arose between Alexandre Peter, who is a Frenchman, and Hyde. Peter's: hat Wing Mown off. he got off the express to get it, and was followed by Hyde, who knocked the Frenchman down and kicked him, inflicting injuries whteh, though not of a very serious natnrc. necessitated his removal to the Hospital. The unfortunate man is expected to be all right again in a few days. The matter will prob»My form the subject of Magisterial inquiry.

Mails for Australia vi& Melbourne close at Hokitika on Friday, 30th inst., at 10 a.m. Telegrams are receivable here up till 8.30 p.m. on the 29th. The weights for the principal events to be run at the forthcoming North Otago Turf Club I?ace3 are published in another column. A meeting of the Committee of the Club will be held this evening at the Empire Hotel, at S o'clock. The Bye-laws Committee of the Municipal Council held a meeting last evening, and drew up a number of bye-laws. Only three matters were considered. One of these was in reference to the keeping of swine; another, with regard to the prohibition of the larrikin nuisance in licensed theatres ; and the third, for the regulation of fares chargeable by licensed vehicles. The report of the Committee will be brought up at the Council meeting to-morrow evening, and a special meeting will afterwards be called, in compliance with the new Municipal Corporations Act, for the consideration of the proposed bve-laws.
