THE TADMORE RUSH.
Referring to the Tadmore rush, a practical miner supplies tne Nelson Colonist with the following :—" There were on Saturday about 80 men ori the ground, tO of whom had set in, and since then about 60 more have arrived. Amongst those reported to be do'ng well are Gardner and party, and Fawcett and his mates, who have been making very good wages ever since Christmas, even allowing for lost time whilst they were away hay-making, and were kept idle by the flood. Smart, some considerable distance up the river, is also doing well. One party, in sinking to a greater depth than usual, were unable to keep, the water out, bub there is no doubt that Californian pumps would be found far more beneficial than the old spear pumps at present used. There is exceedingly good accommodation at Mr. Hodgkinson's, whose house is situate right in the paddock ; indeed some of the claims are amongst his cabbages in the garden, and all provisions are to be had at very reasonable rates." The Colonist's "Special" says of the prospects.of the field : "It is scarcely reasonable at the present moment, or until such time as the deep ground is proved, to use the word ' lead ' in connection with these workings, as there are indications which, in more ways than one, induced the belief that this is ro'a lead. Ground of a similar dt sciipt'on has been worhed on t ! e Matakitaki, Buller, and Gre}-, with the same prospects, and not one half the excitement. It would be necessary that the parties whose intention it is to work this deep ground should unite tog ether in bringing up substantial covered-in tail races, which would materially assist in draining the flat, and it will then depend upon the nature of the ground as to whether it would L-e convenient to drive or paddock it out. There is but a limited extent of ground opened out, arid it is necessary to call attention to the fact that, until the difficulty is solved as to whether there is or is not gold in the flat, no definite information as to its capacitv can be arrived at."
