A NEW THING IN RAILWAYS.

Tic latest new thing in railways (says " (Edipus"') is the New York Elevated. It cmsUfs of posts and girders supporting \ three tracks of rails. Five miles have | been completed, and the trains carry 8000 I passengers a day. The success is sufficient to warrant the extension of the line—how far remains to be seen. It will be remembercd that a Colonial genius, Sir. John Frizzell, proposed something of the same sort -a line supported on trestles but nobodv would listen to him, and he did not take his disappointment kindly. Of course the problem as to the best form of railway must be determined by local considerations, and there is not much in common between New York and Victoria, but there is one truth that must ever stand, and that is, that the cheapest line that c;in be formed through a new country must be that which is based on the natural surface with as little aid from art as possible.
