THIS DAY. [Before James Udall and George Sumpter, Esqrs. J.P.'s.] DRUNKENNESS. Robert Burns and Alfred Shenworth were charged with this offence. Both prisoners promised to reform, the latter of whom said it was his first offence. They were discharged with a caution. SURETIES OF THE PEACE. Biddy Collins was charged, on the complaint of Hannah Hannigan, with having assaulted and beaten Lawrence Hannigan, the child of the complainant. Mrs. Hannigan consequently wished Mrs. Collins to be bound over to keep the peace towards the said Lawrence Hannigan. Defendant admitted having given plaintiff's child "a' slap on the face," but pleaded provocation. Mrs. Hannigan deposed that while standing at her own dour, she saw defendant make a rush at her son, take a rattle out of his hand, and beat him. Lawrence himself deposed that he sometimes struck Mrs. Collins's children ; and defendant said that • plaintiff's children annoyed her very much, and beat her children, and that she did not mean to hurt the boy. The Bench cautioned both complainant and defendant, and dismissed the case.
