OAMARU MUNICIPAL COUNCIL.

The usual fortnightly meeting of the Council took place at the Council Chambers last evening. His Worship the Mayor presided, and the following Councillors were present:—Headland, Booth, Mainland, Galbraith, Gibbs, and Scott. MINUTES AND CORRESPONDENCE. The minutes of two previous meetings v.-ere confirmed, and the outward correspondence read and approved, and the inward correspondence received, THE QUESTION OF LICENSES. At the last meeting of Council the Town Clerk was directed to write to Mr Massey, ilie Town Clerk of Dunedin, asking what course was now pursued by him in the issuing of licenses, and informing him that Mr. Thomson, the Sub-Collector of Customs at Oamaru had been gazetted by the Government as the person to issue such licenses. To that letter the following reply was read by. the Town Clerk : "Town Clerk's Office, '•'Dunedin, 2nd Feb., 1877. "Sir, —I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of your telegram of the 2nd

of February, 1877, relative to the Collee" tors of Customs receiving certain license fees, and paying same to the Borough Accomit, and enquiring the action being taken by the Dunedin Corporation herein. In reply, I beg to inform you that this Corporation does not contemplate any departure from the old method, viz., to receive the fees direct, it being considered probable that some difficulty might arise in procuring a refund thereof by the Government in some cases. I ifcc, "J. M. Massey, 5 "Town Clerk. "The Town Clerk, Oamaru." •EXTENSION OF GAS MAINS. An application was received from Messrs Lees and Moore, asking that a large-sized gas main should be extended to their property, which consisted of an area of about two acres. Councillor Booth thought it would be very unwise to incur any unnecessary expense unless it were shown that the Corporation would reap some benefit therefrom. He would therefore move, " That the application be referred to the Gasworks Committee, to report upon at next meeting." The resolution was seconded by Councillor Scott, and carried. ALLEGED NUISANCE. The following letter, received from Mr. John Black, was read and referred to the Public Works Committee : " To his Worship the Mayor and Honorable Councillors of the Town of Oamaru. " Your Worship and Gentlemen of the Council assembled, —The humble petition of John Black, occupier of section 8, Block LZiXI., sheweth that there exists at present, on the adjoining section, and on each side of the partially formed street, a filthy and abominable water-hole. The obnoxious vapors and stinks arising therefrom is, to say the very least, disagreeable to the olfactory organs of myself and family, and, if not put a stop to immediately, may cause an epidemic to attack the lieges of your town, of a more virulent form than any which has ever occurred. To prevent such a calamity taking place, your petitioner would pray that your Worship and gentleman Councillors would cause to be made a permanent culvert through the street, at the place indicated, to allow the escape of the nuisance complained of, and your pstitioner, as in duty bound, will ev.-v pray. " (Signed) John Black." APPLICATION TO ESECT VERANDAH. An application was received from Mr. Cleghorn for permission to erect a verandah in front of the Waterloo House, Thames-street, similar in height and construction to that lately erected by Mr. J. K. Brown. The permission was granted, to be carried out in accordance with the terms of the application, and subject to the approval of the Engineer. DAMAGE TO BY THE FLOODS. A letter was received from Mr. A. Simpson, stating that owing to the new cut of the Creek iii Chelmer-street not having been properly constructed, the water, during the recent floods, had overflowed and damaged the property. He therefore notified to the Corporation that he would seek compensation for the injury. Councillor Headland moved, Councillor Galbraith seconded, and it was carried unanimously, '"' That Mr. Simpson's letter be acknowledged, and that h be informed that the Council does not recognise any responsibility in the matter." APPLICATION TO ERECT SHED. Mr. Wansbrough, of Thames-street, sought permission to erect an iron shed, 10ft, x Bft,, on Section 4, Block V. The application was granted, the conditions stated in the letter to be adhered to. PERMANENT LEVELS! IN ALU-STREET. The application of Mr. George Rrownlee, for the permanent levels of Aln-street South, opposite Section 21, Block XLIII., was referred to the Engineer. HOARDING. The application of Mr. James Reid, for permission to erect a permanent hoarding on the spare ground beside the Municipal Chambers, was refused. ENTRANCE TO CELLAR, . The application of Mr. Johnstone, for permission to construct an entrance through the footpath to the Queen's Hotel, in accordance with submitted plan, was received. The application was granted, the work being subject to the approval of the Surveyor. MDNICPIPAL AUDIT. The following letter was handed in by the Municipal Auditors ;
