THE HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY.

The usual monthly meeting of the Horticultural Society was held last evening, at the Albion House, Wansbeck-street. Mr. John Lemon occupied the chair, and there were also present —Messrs. Steward, Falconer, Spratt, Paterson, Clydesdale, and Simpson. The Sub-Committee reported that the points gained by the principal exhibitors at the last exhibition were as follows : Gardeners—Heywood, 65 ; Dr. De Lautour, 24; Hartley, 22 ; Connell, 14 ; Steinson, 4 ; Main, 4. Amateurs—Timlick, 56 ; Ireland, C 4 ; Clydesdale, 37 ; Robertson, 6 ; Miss Edwards, 6. On the motion of Mr. Steward, seconded by Mr. Spxatt, it was resolved, " That in addition to Messrs. .Heywood and Ireland, framed certificates be given

to Messrs. Timlick, Hartley, De Lautour, Clydesdale, and to Messrs. Stemson and Leigh for their exhibit of conifera. Mr. Falconer proposed that for the purposes of the next show, the definition of the terms "amateur" and "gardener" be as dtscribed in the Dunedin Society's rules, viz,, "gardeners"—those persons who devote the bulk of their time to gardening; and the word "amateurs"— those who cultivate their gardens apart from their regular daily occupations.— Carried. It was agreed that the Autumn Exhibition be held on Saturday, the 10th of March, and that the Chairman and Treasurer be authorised to engage the Volunteer Hall for the occasion ; as also the Secretary to get 200 members' cards printed for the year ending 31st December, 1877. It was resolved, " That the gentlemen who acted as Judges at tho Spring Show be requested to act again in the same capacity. The Secretary to write to those gentlemen requesting the favor of an early reply ; and that Mr. Spratt be requested to assist the Secretary in taking the entries of awards ; also, that entries of exhibits be made with the Secretary two clear days before the show." On the motion of Mr. Spratt, seconded by Mr. Falconer, it was resolved, "That at the next and future Shows, silver medals be given to the exhibitors scoring the greatest number of points in each of the following classes, viz. : —Pot Plants, Gardeners; Fruits and Vegetables combined, Gardeners ; Pot Plants, Amateurs ; Fruits and Vegetables combined, Amateurs." A small arcounfc was jmsed for payment, and the next meeting of Committee appointed for Thursday, the 22nd inst., at eight p.m., after which a vote of thanks to the chair concluded the proceedings.
