MUNICIPAL COUNCIL.

The usual fori nightly meeting of the Municipal Council was held last evening, his Worship in the Chair. There were «!.w present—Councillors Booth, Gibbs, Mainland, and Headland. MINt*TE.S, &c. A telegram was received from Wellington, asking if the Council would be satisfied to have the licenses hitherto issued by the Council, issued in future by the Oollretor of Customs. After some discussion, the Town Clerk was instructed to reply I>y telegram as follows: —"Your mode of issuing licenses considered at Council meeting last night. Council prefers; tlsat the .s\-stem in force under the Otago Local Revenue's Act, 1872, should be continued." Before, however, taking that step, the Dunedin Council to be communicated with. ADDITION TO PREMISES. Permission was granted to John M'Lnren to make addition in stone to his premises, on Section i, Block VI. CANCELLING LEASE. Messrs. Sinclair and West wrote, asking the Council to cancel the lease of two section in the Market Reserve, as the creek cuts off all access to the said sections.

The matter was referred to the Reserve Committee to report upon. engineer's report. The following report was read : "Engineer's Office, " Oamaru, Jan. 31, 1877. "To his Worship the Mayor and Councillors.

"Gentlemen, —I have the honor to report that the main streets and roads are in very fair order at present. " The outlying streets are being well attended to, and the different accesses there will be shortly very much improved. " The new outfall for drainage at Chel-mer-street has been completed, and is working well; all the nuisance complained of has been done away with. "The metal, which has been recently broken, will be laid on- the street before the winter sets in. " Mr. Blackley is making good progress with the asphalting contract. " Tiie entire permanent survey of Water-works will be finished* in a few days. The working plans are in active preparation, and the whole works can be tendered for by the Ist of March next. — '' I have, &c., "D. A. M'Leod, "Engineer." COMMITTEE MINUTES. The minutes of the Gas Works and Public Works Committee were read and confirmed. PETITION. A petition was presented by Councillor Gibbs from residents in Severn Ward, against the removal of the pound from its present position to the corner of Chelmerstreet and Cross-lane, believing that the change of site would be injurious to the health of the neighborhood, and dangerous to life and limb. "It was resolved, "That the Council is of opinion that the removal of the pound to the site proposed will not be productive of the evils anticipated; and the Council considers that the site fixed upon is the most suitable, and therefore does not see its way to accede to the prayer of the petition, more especially as it is not intended that the pound shall remain permanently in the town." THE TOWN WEIGHBRIDGE. It was resolved that the fees for weighing coals on the Corporation weighbridge be reduced to 3d. per ton, and that that sum be the minimum charge. This concluded the business of the meeting, and the Council then adjourned.
