SCHOOL COMMITTEE MEETING.
A meeting took place last evening at Mr. Church's office. Present : Messrs. Evans. Barclay, Sumpter, Hislop, Clones, Fleming. Gibbs, and Lid die. Three candidates for the office of Chairman were put forward, viz., Messrs. Gibbs, Sumpter, and N. Fleming. On the ballot being taken, the first-named gentleman was found to be the successful one. Mr. John Hardy was also chosen a3 Secretary out of four applicants for that office. The Visiting Committee was then appointed, consisting of the Chairman, Messrs. Fleming, Lidclle, and Hislop ; Messrs. Lidclle, Barclay, Evans, and the Chairman being appointed a Building Committee. Mr. Lidclle was appointed Treasurer.
It was then resolved that the Visiting Committee visit the Grammar School and report oil the pupil teachers ; and it was further resolved that both schools should he visited once a month, and that the Committee should meet quarterly.
Mr. Scmjfter moved, " That it be agreed that a sum not exceeding £2O be devoted to prizes and certificates of merit, to be awarded to those children who have obtained the greatest number of marks in their respective classes during the session." In so doing, the mover said that he held that the intention of the Committee to give prizes for the work of the session should be notified at the very commencement of the session.
After some discussion it was agreed to postpone the affair till next meeting. With regard to the affairs of the North School, Mr. Scmpter moved, " That as by a small majority the public meeting resolved in favour of Mr. D. Fleming being retained in office, no further action be taken by this Committee," which was put ill the following form and carried : " That as the expression of opinion at the
public meeting was in favor of the retention of Mr. D. Fleming as Headmaster of the North School, the Committee decide to take no further action in the matter, and request the Secretary to write to Mr. Fleming, informing him of the decision of the Committee ; but also to again draw liis attention to the Inspector's report, and expect that he will remedy the defects, so far as possible, pointed out therein." A resolution to raise the fees sixpence per quarter for each scholar was passed. A hearty vote of thanks to Mr. Church for his services as Secretary during the past year, and an expression of regret at liis business engagements preventing him from continuing in that office finished the proceedings.
