The Evening Mail.

FRIDAY, DECEMBER 15, 1876. LOCAL AND GENERAL.

'* Words* are Chia£». arxl s drop of ink falling npon a thoosfht may pteiiiKc Chat which makes thousands think."

It is somewhat singular the apathy displayed in the Waitaki County elections. Notwithstanding that to-morrow at noon is

the hour appointed for the several nominations, there are but two candidates as yet in the tield for the nine ltiding3. So far, no candidate has been publicly mentioned and notified to represent Awamoka, Otakaike» Utamatakau, Ohau, Waiareka, Papakaio, or Hampden Riding 3, at the hoard. Bachehler's Pantascope will be again exhibited this evening, when the spirited proprietor indends to distribute among3t the audience a large number of valuable articles, atnong-ft which we notice an ormulu clock with a large glass shade, brown silk umbrella, pair of handsome vase 3, inlaid workbox, black silk umbrella, and between thirty and forty other prizes. The principle upon which they will be delivered will be the American. Of what that is we must confess our ignorance, but from the fact that it is specially notified, we presume it must possess some especial merit over all others. We perceive that to-morrow there will be an afternoon performance for the convenience of schools, at which every lady and child present will receive a gift. The school session of IS7G is at an end, and the children have entered upon their live weeks' holidays, no doubt to their own delight, and the possible regret of materfatuilia-, who may now bid adieu to repose for that period. There is one body, however, who must feel glad and proud at the termination —the School Committee, who fo r the past week have known no rest, in their efforts to provide prizes and carry out the arrangements for the public exhibition. However, if they seek reward, they were amply repaid by the success of their labors as evidenced last evening, by the delight ' the pupils and the sati, faction of the parents. Wi have boeii asked to particularly request visitors to the Horticultural Show tomorrow, to refrain from appropriating any of the exhibits of fruit or flowery a3 has been t'u c.H2 at form?r exhibiti >ns to a large extent. We have also been asked to intimate to intending exhibitors, that it would be a great convenience if their exhibits were sent to the Voluutecr Hall before ten o'clock in the momi'ig, in order to enable the Committee to have them properly arranged. The charge against -James Leslie, for stealing from the person, which was being heard at the Police Court yesterday evening when we went to press, Had not been concluded when the G'.'iirt rose at six o'clock. The . case was ad !ourned until next Tuesday, the . acccused being set at liberty in the meantime on bail.

A special meeting of the Committee of the Horticultural Society was held at the Albion House, last evening. Present—Mr. Spratt, in the chair; and Messrs. Main. M'Uren, Kidd, Clydesdale, Earlc, ami the hon. secretary, Mr. A. Simpson. The tender of Mr. I'.arle for the refreshment booth was accepted, and he was further rc'jue-sted to provide music during the Show. It w;is re.olvcd that persons should be appointed to protect the exhibits, the entries of a large number of which were handed in. After appointing Wednesday, the 2-Sth, for the next Committee meeting, a few more matters of routine business were transacted, and a vote of thanks terminated the meeting.
