THE CHRISTMAS EXAMINATIONS.

THE NORTH SCHOOL.

Yesterday was a busy day in the North School, on the occasion of the annual public examination of the different classes, prior to breaking up for the Christmas holidays. The school-room was gracefully decorated with evergreens and boughs, a portion being set aside for the display of fancy needlework. Shortly after eleven o'clock, the following members of the School Committee commenced their labors as examiners : Messrs. George Sumpter, A. J. S. Headland, C. Galbraith, John Falconer, and Henry Aitken, assisted by the Rev. Mr. Armitage, and Messrs. Watson, Johnston, and Bee. The examination was a most painstaking and search- j ing one, extending over five hours, and »ras watched by a large number of the parents and friends of the pupils with marked interest. The first Class inspected was the Junior one, under the care of Miss Kernahan, the scholars of which were, of course, not very advanced, but tKe results of the examination were most satisfactory, particularly in reading. The writing by those in the more advanced classes under the superintendence of Mr* Fleming, the Head-master, and his

assistant, Mr. Todd, was next inspected, which also proved very satisfactory. The reading and elocution by the boys in the advanced classes called for special commendation. and although quits so much could not be said of the girls' school, the cause might be found more in the timidity natural to the sex than in a want of knowledge of these acquirements. At the conclusion of the examinations, the chairman, in dismissing the scholars for five weeks' holidays, said that, owing to the Committee being particularly short of funds, an appeal had to be made to the public for money to purchase prizes. Those, he might say, would be awarded to the boys and girls who the examiners thought were the most deserving of them, and, together with the certificates of merit, would be presented at the Volunteer Hall on Thursday night.
