I A fivw clays since, in a leading article in I these coiu;r.Tis, we advocated the. appoiutmerit of Mr. Co"v;;r.s, as General Mana- ■ gt-r of Railways for the whole of the | Middle Island. The UndhlawX Xcv;s asi surfs, in an issue published since then, ! that that arrangement has now definitely ; been decided upon, and that Mr. Coxtees is to have chaise of t'.sis, and Mr. PassMoBE of tlxu North Island. We trust the information of our contemporary is relit ably; but we are inclined to think the
statement premature, and thatfiwhatever may be the final arrangements, nothing is absolutely fixed as yet. The Otdgo Daily Times, which in common with both Press and public, thoroughly, approves of the projected appointment, took the trouble to make inquiries on the matter, and learned that the appointment has n;t yet been made. As the line to Christchurch will be open for public traffic next month, it is most desirable that arrangements should at once be made by the General Government to place the charge of the Canterbury lines in the hands of those who will remove, rather than throw, qbstacles in the way of the travelling public, and make them a convenience, instead of what they have been in the past. ;-i^~:L..
