Tfifi. rttjcistton of th'.i M;in;cip-tif C >;tn:ul with regard to the application for tho privilege of Uying down train ways on the conditions propose! by the promoters, is srtch as- mttft ine-:>t with the approval of the ratepayers. Wo confess we were exceedingly picked with the calm and impartial spirit which pervaded the whole discussion, the miestion Wing treated with a temperate consideration, which, unfortunately,. « rather the exception than the rale when matters of a similar nature come before corporate bodies. All through the discussion last evening a strong desire wad evincod on the part of Councillor?., one and several, to strain the utmost point to grant all concisions consistent with the conservation of the property and interests of tha citizens at large. As one member very pithily pnt it, what aUU the miller t» a benefit to the farmer. and where the farmer has facilities the town and district ultimately reap the advantage. It is jt»3t possible that the gentlemen who have been the projectors of the proposed tramway may view the condition* upon which the Council are willing to entertain the matter, as barriers to the carrying out of the scheme altogether ; but it most be borne
in mind that they are, in a measure, 1 answerable for so stringent conditions. When the matter first cropped tip, and the application was made, the projectors submitted a plan by which the trucks were to have been loaded by shoots, and it was explained to several Councillors who officially inspected the mills in ques--1 tion, that the reason the tramway was | brought so close to the kcrbing was to brin" it within reach of those shoots. 2Tow, however, it appears that idea has been abandoned, and when before the Council, at its mid-day meeting yesterday, Mr. Meek distinctly stated that the tramway concession would bo useless unless turn-tables were allowed. During the ventilation of the question it was shown that unless tiie raiis were removed further into the centre of the street than at first I pm|>-,s-;d, the working of the table would place a barrier over a portion of the foottr.>.' r .h : and even supposing the line were tviii«v..il. the sidings do-.vn fhe right3-of--1 xv.;y would dam up the water channel. ' Another potent reason wliy the original [■plan should i«e adhered to if the conccs- ! .v.ori be grunted is, that as the promoters i do not iiu':?i:l to 1.-iy down the proper j irnmwav iron. .r-.ouhl the line run in tiie i c r.tre of the M.r'::t, or even on a portion | thereof there was likely to be car- | tra!;if-. there was great danger of \ narrow wheeled vehicles getting locked on ' tin: vniU.
