CANTERBURY SPORTING NOTES.
The -work commenced early on Thursday morning. Guy Fawkes, Maroro, and Songster did a turn once round, old Guy, as usual, leading off a few lengths in advance of the 'three-year-olds. Passing the stand, Maroro was up alongside the old horse, having shaken off Songster, who was totally \uiable to hold his own wich his companions. Isaac Walton (stripped) started on the opposite side of the course, and had a good spin round to the stand, when Kingfisher joined him, and the pair went at it neck-and-neck up to the threequarter mile-post, where they were pulled up. Lady of the Lake next did a sharp canter once round stripped. Fanny Fisher colt was next stripped, started on the opposite side of the course, and taken round past the stand at a good pace ; passing the gate leading out of the training ground, the colt swerved off to go out. Tne boy soon pulled him up and on to the
course again, and he was taken quickly round with Kingfisher to the gate, when he bolted twice again, although having a. "conipanioh with him. Ngaro was stripped and went round twice at a fair pace ; then Ariel and Dead Heat took their turn twice round pretty fast, the colt going as well as ever I have seen him go. Fishhook was stripped and did a fast gallop once round. The General's team contented themselves with short spurts on the top end of the course. Punga went once round very well by herself, so did Templeton, who took his gallop twice round on the plough. ChilcQngton was out, and went once round, stripped, and the Moose did a very strong gallop twice round. Bob Ray was absent, report says at Mr. Delamain's private training ground, on another private trial intent. I hear Korari is doing some good gallops on an afternoon, and is looking very pink. Stirabout, also, does his work at the same time with Amohia and a sister to the Chief. There is some mystery attached to Puriri. He is out taking long walking exercise every morning, and looks as sound and well as anything Mr. Redwood has, but the colt seldom or never takes a gallop, which does not look well. Wahnea stock seem particularly unfortunate, few of them evor coming to the post, and when they do, only for a race meeting or two. Manuka only saw the Ohristchurch racecourse, Papapa scarcely did anything, Wainui won the Champagne Stakes, and was made a hot favourite for the next Derby, started, and wasnowhere. Again, last year Kauri came down with a great flourish of trumpets, as a son of Wahnea, and a fine upstanding horse he was to look at as well, was purchased at a high figure as a good thing for the Derby, never saw the post, and I am very much afraid this Puriri, of whom there has been so much talk, will be a second Kauri, and likewise retire into oblivion. Star.
