It is said that some of the bookmakers had a pretty rose time of it at Ascot. One of the fraternity throws in for £IO,OOO, and another for £B,OOO. As evidences of " tall betting," it is reported that Lord Dudley had 6.000 to 5,000 about Julius Cresar for the Prince of Wales's Stakes at this meeting. The horse was third. He r.lso took 7,000 to 4,000 about Forerunner for the Cup, and the horse was likewise third. Further, he took 10,000 to 4,000 about Talisman for the Alexandra Plate. Tliu horse was unplaced. 7,500 to 5,000 on Tangible, and, to finish up with, he had 10,000 to 5,000 on Petrach in one bet, and it is aiso stated that he bet 12,000 to 2,000 on the same horse when Coltness beat him, and that, as before hinted, he lost 20,000 by the week. This has gone the rounds of some of the papers, and it is very l'kely to be true. A new and remarkable motive power (says a Home paper) has been discovered in ammonia gas.
