A sneeial meeting of the Committee of the Mechanics* Institttte will take place this evening, to take into consideration the disposal of the concert fonds. There i.» every probability of Oatjiam having an ©pportonity of judging of the merits of " the California!- 'Diamond," ahoat whom there has bsen smell a diversity of opinion with the Imncdin Press. W#? have keen kindly shown a telegram which states she purposes paying a visit to thi* town. and giving entertainments or the 4th and sth of m%t month.
The performance advertised by the Vaudeville Trot-pe. for last evening did not take ptae.e. When the hour had arrived for the entertainment, the number of patrons km too limited to prove in the slightest degree rernrmerative, and the few who had paid for entrance were returned their money, the company widely determining 60 cle-se the

Alluding to the arrival of the mail steamer City of Sydney, the Auckland Star says : "The City of Sydney h a fine-looking steamer, on the same model and with" fittings in all respects* si-oilar to the City of Pan Francisco. It will be recollected the Zealandla last month did not bring the cargo which had been shipped* on board the Aua-
tralia at San Francisco for Auckland. The Australia, took it on to-Sydney, and it arrives now n month late in the City of Sydney while the cargo shipped in the City of San Francisco for here has again gone on to Sydney, in consequence of no time being allowed for transhipment at Kandavan. Of course, it would not do to detain mail steamers for cargo, but the inconvenience caused to our Auckland merchants may be set down as another characteristic drawback of the forked service." Farmers in this Colony may have reason to exclaim—"lt i 3 an ill wind that blows nobody any good." The latest advices from Sydney and Melbourne indicate rather a gloomy state of matters, the consequence of which will naturally be a good opening for Xew Zealand produce. From Adelaide the news has been wired that "more implementmakers are discharging hands, because of the bad agricultural prospects." This is significant, and not less so the Melbourne market statement that " wheat is hardening." From these fncts it will be seen that agriculturists here should have no difficulty in finding a market for cereals.
" Stop my paper !"—We ( Wn>iant)l TriItimr) %vere rather amused, but not surprised, yesterday, at receiving two copies of the Trilnw marked " refused'"—more especially as one bore tlie address, " Mr. G. Cliff, Timaru," and the other, "Mr. P. W. Hnttoti, Timaru.'" Now, tlie only reason we can assign /or this dreadful blow is that our remarks re County Boundaries have wounded the feelings of those noble-minded individuals, and induced them to torture U3 by refusing to receive our paper. Be that as it may, the blow is terrible, reminding us of a case brought under our notice some time since, in which a pompous individual lodged a few pounds in a bar.!:, and, on being refused an overdraft, withdrew his account, feeling confident that the institution would stop payment at once. The exasperated biped was, however, doomed to disappointment, for, on passing the bank on the following day, he was surprised to find the shutters were not up. Will Messrs. Cliff and Hut ton kindly forward us their photos ':
