FOOTBALL MATCH.
Oamartj v. Dunedin. This long talked-of match was commenced to-day on the Oamaru Cricket Ground at 3.10. The Dunedin team arrived by the Taiaroa at three o'clock this morning, and were billetted at the different hotels in town. They left Dunedin at 6.30 last night, and experienced a pleasant run up. The names of the city players are—J. C. Thomson (captain), A Cargill, F. Cargill, F. Fulton, T. Fulton, H. Hope, H. Rose, J. Mills, J. Murray, W. Morrison, F. K. Smith, J. Holland, F. Maitland, and G. Dixon. Mr. A. Mansford acted as umpire for the Dunedin team. We are given to understand that this is the first match the Dunedin men have played away from home this season. Both teams have been equally unfortunate in having bad weather for practice, but, nevertheless, the play exhibited to-day was a long way above the average. The attendance, which included a number of | the fair sex, was larger than we anticipated. A better day could scarcely have been selected for the contest, the weather being lovely, in fact, if anything, rather too warm for football playing. The representatives of Oamaru were : Messrs, E. Booth, J. Burnett, Chancellor, C, Fenwick, F. Fenwick, F. D. Holdsworth, G. J. Millington, G. C. M'Ghshan. J, Nichols, J. Rice, D. Snodgrass, A. Y, Smith, J. Wait, J. Walls, and M. C. Hickey. A. Y. Smith captained the local plaj r ers. Thompson won the toss, and decided to defend the North goal. The rides were Rugby Union, which mean.t that running with the ball is allowel The weights of the Dunedin m\ averaged list., and Oamaru lOst. 81s, Mr. M'Donald, acted as umpire- for Oamaru. Mr. J. C. Marshall officiated as field umpire. A. Y. Smith kicked of with a fine lift. After a little smart play, during which Snodgrass did his share, Murray, for Dunedin, kicked a goal within five minutes from starting. There was no delay, and Smith kicked off again. The play was fastiand furious, the "spills" causing the spectators m mense amusement. Rose, for Dunedin, made a splendid run, but was collared, and received a regular cropper. Eollands a tumble, which resulted in his guernsey being torn clean off his back. Oamaru got a chance of a drop-kick oppfr site the goal, but failed. Dixon then made a splendid run for the Oamaru goal, but was collared, when Rose got a drop kick, but did not succeed in sending the ball between the poles. When our re porter left the game stood —Dunedin ok goal. [Left kicking.]
