At 4 o'clock this morning, the Brunner Gorge Railway Suspension Bridge, which was erected to be open for traffic next month, fell with an awful crash into the river. The anchor plates on the south side had been snapped through much strain on them, causing the whole bridge to collapse. No lives were lost. The anchor plates were generally considered too weak, but are according to designs sent from Wellington.
