THE DETHRONED SULTAN.
Our telegrams published in the present issue allude to the dethroning of the Sultan Abdul-Aziz Khan. The following particulars may be of interest to our readers : The late Sultan of Turkey, Abdul-Aziz Khan, was bom February 9tli, 1830, being the second son of the Sultan Malmioud Klian, and brother of the late Sultan Abdul Medjid, on whose death, June 28th, ISGI, he ascended the throne of the Ottoman Empire, according to the custom which prefers a brother to a son as heir. The chief events of the present Sultan's career have been the disputes with the Viceroy of Egypt arising out of the construction of the Suez Canal ; the visit to France and England in 1867 ; the Cretan revolt, terminated in 1868 ; the insurrection in Herzegovina, which broke out- last year, and still smoulders on ; and the financial difficulties of the Turkish exchequer. Vast sums of money have been spent by the Sultan in palaces and ironclads, and the present prospects of his creditors are by no means encouraging.
