AN EXTRAORDINARY CASE.

The Glasgow authorities are at present investigating a peculiar case of swindling! A few days ago, a girl named Flora M'Leod left South Uist in the steamer Dunara Castle, for Glasgow, there to be married to a young man who was working in the city. During; the voyage she made the acquaintance of .U person who repre-' sented that he was-an ' engineer on board, and gave his name as tjyit of Hugh Brodie, Ere the steamer reached its destination, the young woman,' notwithstanding lier previous engagement, had promised to become his bride, the marriage to be cele> brated as soon as the city was reached,! and a special license could be procured. On the vessel arriving at Glasgow, both left arm-in-arm, and went to M'Leod's sister's house in {Dorset-street, where the new-found lover was warmly welcomed, and the former one, a labourer, so coldly repulsed that lie'immediately left, remark ing indignantly, '' I may go. I see I'm nae wanted here." On the following day Brodie took the young woman along the Green and pointed out one of the. large houses in Monteith-row as the residence of his mother, giving the girl to understand that liis mother was worth a great deal o! money, which would fall to him at lis death. He thereupon borrowed £2 10s from her under the pretext that lie' could not draw any money from the bank thai day, and also her gold ring. Since then he has not been heard of, and the autho rities are searching for him. It appean that he is "wanted" in connection witl similar cases. The young woman has returned to Uist. ;
