HIS EXPECTATIONS ?

Tale of Wealthy Father In The Argentine Ends* ln Court "LIE belongs to a wealthy Argentinian family, is m touch with Argentine and receives money from his father there." So declared Mr. R. N. Bayer tz when defending Walter Benbow Valdimar, alias Waiter Lucien de , Ferdinand, who pleaded guilty to fourteen charges of obtaining money and goods by false pretences. Of- a dark complexion, bespeaking sunny climes and with deep brown eyes, it appears* that Valdimar's method of obtaining the money and the goods was by representing that he was to receive, m December of this year, the sum of £40,000 from his father's Argentinian estate. , Such a system may sound well theoretically, but as Valdimar has found out, it has numerous dangers when put into practice. "I understand there was another man who didn't care to face the court from whom Valdimar borrowed £400," remarked the Detective- sergt. when he had proved the charges. Det.-sergt. Kelly also said that Valdimar had been before the court m Wellington m 1911| and had been convicted and ordered to come up for sentence. Among Valdimar's victims were a tailor and an hotel-keeper. Mr. Bayertz declared that all of them, with the exception of the tailor, had known Valdimar for years and knew that he received money from the. Argentine. He pleaded for probation, saying that restitution would be made m about six months. Remarking that the benefits of pro- ! bation were not intended for such cases, his Worship imposed sentence of four months' imprisonment on each of the first two charges, and convicted and discharged de Ferdinand on the other counts. The sentences are to be cumulative. \
