North Eleven' Strong In Batting
'(From "N.Z. Troth's" Auckland Rep.) t^ROSPECTS for Auckland's success m • the 'South Island seem quite fair, but they will have to leave nothing to chance It they are to come out on top. However, the bowling, strength of the "Auckland side is better balanced than It has been for some years. Canterbury will field Merritt, but Auckland has a fine bowling team. Cleverley and Mathe--Bon wiD, of course, supply the pace. iSatheson is untiring, and Cleverley. too, has shown that h© can last. Then, there's Wenstey to give the medium-pace uLunT. ■ j Skipper Alleott can bowl all day if he wishes to, and can, be relied upon to come tip to scratch if either of the fast bowlers shows any signs of tiring. McCoy will provide the slow, googly Btuff. He is a reliable change bowler because of the contrast. "".'"■ Against Ota go, the northern province will come up against the bowling of such men as veteran Roger Blunt, who is as good with the bat as the ball, and Dunning, Lemin and Co. Nevertheless, Auckland hag, a pretty strong batting side to field. 'Truth" has no hesitation m prophecying that H. G. Vivian will distinguish himself on the tour. The young, lefthanded colt gives every indication of developing into one of. the Dominion's leading batsmen, and if he doesn't pile np runs against tlje Southern bowling, it will be a surprise. .- ' J. E. Mills and G. If. Weir have both had past experience m these sort of events, and both distinguished themselves last year against the Englishmen. It will be all right If Thakabou can strike form for the occasion. At the beginning of this season, he seemed a bit off, but If he can hit In last year's style, he will be high up the list. Then there's Eden skipper, Gillespie, j and A. J. Postles of the same club. Both know the ropes, and Postles has been right on tip-top form to date. It Is to be hoped he keeps it up for the southerners. Hunt, of Ponsonby, is a sound man to have behind the stumps The Northerners will have to look to their fielding. "Fhakabou is one of the most brilliant Blips that has been seen there m years. But there is a strong tendency among Auckland batsmen and bowlers to let the fielding part of the game slip. The resalt is that the brilliant fields are usu\mliy those "who are just average with ! the bat. . Skipper Duncan, of Parnell, can knock up runs, and on occasion take wickets, but it Is usually In the field that he shines. He Is one of the most brilliant fields In Auckland.
