A WAPUNI PROMISES GOOD SPORT
CUP & OPEN SPRINT Merry Damon Has Given Right Indications Lately SHORT RACE IS OPEN Indications are that one of the class horses engaged will win the Manawatu Cup at Awapuni on Boxing Day, but m the open sprint there is room for a surprise.
■"THERE is, a field of fourteen left m 1 the Cup, and Historic will- carry number one cloth. He is giving a stone to the nearest — Seatown — and being such a greater carrier of poundage he cannot be wiped, out ■of calculations. ' ' He is sure to, run a great race, and must be m the money. Quite a lot expect Merry Damon to bring home the bacon this time, I and he has finished fast m his last two outings. Now he is down m the weights, and what beats him should win. Seatown won last year, but toe has not been seen for some time, and that should not help him. Pahu may be m need of the race, but Done Jose, -on his performances at Riccarton, and his track ■ work ; i since, must be m the final struggle. . Shrewd is sure to be back to his best spring form. Bold Front runs good races when
caught at his best, but Spearmiss has not shown her best, for some time. Summed up, the chances of Merry Damon and Historic read best, with Don Jose a worthy invader from the south. On what has been shown m public m recent weeks 'the three dangerous ones m the Fitzherbert Handicap would be' Arrow Lad, Just An Idea and Royal Parade. This trio should carry the bulk of the'investments, but it has to be borne m mind that Consent went a great j race m the Stewards'. The fact that he Avill have a bit of pull m the matter of riding cannot be overlooked. Cuticle goes well, and Silver Coot has a torrent of speed, and then there is Lord Thomond, but he is riot a kid's horse. In expecting Consent, Just An Idea and Arrow Lad to make them a return,, backers should be close to the dividend payers.
