OPEN SPRINT (From "N.Z. Truth's". Christchurch Rep.) pHARMAINE has had only three races this season, and has shown improved form m each. If she has shown the improvement warranted by her two runs at Riccarton last month she is going to be very hard to beat m the Federal Handicap, the chief sprint on the opening day at Dunedin. There is no doubt that she put up] a sterling effort when she ran third to Spoon and Appledore over a distance she does not appreciate, and it was only m the last few -yards that she failed. The Middle Park Plate winner will be assured of strong support. Spoon has done well since last raced and m her- track essays has revealed rare speed. ' Lower down m the list is Palermo, which, although never pitted against such strong opposition before, has demonstrated by his efforts ip hack class that he is a bit above the ordinary. » He looks capable of keeping those at the bottom of the handicap safe.
