WAS A GLASSY EFFORT

Arethusa Enhances Her Northern Derby Prospects

BRIGHTON RUN IMPROVES HER

(From "N.Z. Truth's" South Island Trotting Representative.) The victory of Arethusa m the Mace Memorial Handicap at Brighton was full of merit, and her performance was particularly pleasing m view of her Derby engagement m Auckland next week, where her position of favorite is being disputed by Red Shadow after his doughty deeds at Forbury.

AFTER Arethusa had raced on the fence behind the leaders for a mile and five furlongs, Kennerley pulled her out on the bend and came on the outside of two horses to take the lead before the straight was reached. The Wrack filly was tackled halfway down the running by Hostess, which had been driven a perfectlytimed raced without covering an inch of extra ground, and then Tarndale appeared with a late run. The whip had to be applied vigorously ,to keep Arethusa m front of Hostess after Tarndale had tangled when nearing the post, but she stuck

on gamely, and the watch said that she had reeled oft! the last half at something like a 2.9 clip. Red Shadow still retains many friends, but they must have left Brighton with just a shade of doubt and probably minus their morning "Cruschen feeling." Provided a hot summer week m Auckland does not have any effect on the fl-lly, "Truth's" representative believes that although on a fast track Red Shadow may beat Arethusa over a short course, her stamina will carry the day for her m the Derby, which looks like being a real clash.
