THE DERBY

Red Shadow Will Take Beating

ARETHUSA, TOO

(From "N.Z. Truth's" North Island Trotting Rep.)

ARETHUSA'S taking victory at New ** Brighton on Saturday speaks well for her G.N. Derby engagement. In stepping over two miles at a 2.18 clip the filly was responsible for an effort that would bring her into favor for ten derbies. But on the other hand the three winning efforts staged by Red Shadow j last month at Addington take a lot of forgetting. Red Shadow is a colt, and sex sways many of the fans m the light-harness code when it comes to selecting a probable winner of a classic. Of course the state of the going may have something to do with' the manner m which the 1930 Northern Blue Ribbon affair will be summed up. It is claimed that Red Shadow can only produce the stuff when the conditions are of the best, but Auckianders will pass that by if he is racing on any sort of a track at Epsom. Then again, the Alcaroa Handicap on the opening day of the meeting will provide a preliminary, and how both these three-year-olds shape will' have a lot of bearing on the Derby summing up. Red Shadow will be bracketed with Rawhitiroa, and Arethusa with Flying Cloud. The first-mentioned combination will probably carry most cash.
