McNAB AS STARTER
(From "N.Z. Truth's" Christchurch Rep.) "THE petition forwarded to the comA m:ttee of the Canterbury Jockey Club by the Riccarton trainers a few weeks back asking permission for the C.J.C. starter, Peter McNab, to act m the same capacity for the country clubs m Canterbury, has evidently not met with the approval of the committee as a. definite decision has not yet been reached. It is hard to understand what is the stumbling block toa request like this, as it is certain that unless something is done mighty quickly to improve the standard of starting, the smaller clubs will have to shut up shop for the want of patronage. It does not look a very big thing to ask the C.J.C. a favor, but the way they are hanging fire over the question leaves a doubt as to whether they care a jot about the welfare of the clubs m a less fortunate position. It is certain that they are not displaying any undue agility m acceding to the request. Surely they are far seeing enough to recognise that if these struggling country clubs are going to be up against it for want of a good starter, that the C.J.C! will also be sufferers to a great extent?' Riccarton trainers are thinking- of sending a delegation of. two or three to interview the committee and thrash the matter out thoroughly, and perhaps when the question has been reviewed from every aspect it might be considered m a different light. For the benefit of owners, trainers, jockeys and the racing public generally, it is to be hoped that a suitable remedy will be found before the smaller meetings hold sway again.
