GOT LOT FOH A LITTLE

Big Betting Coup At Waipa

(From "N.Z. Truth's" Auckland Rep.) It is easy to be wise after the event, but if everything one hears I - is true, then it is indeed surprising how Aspian returned such a great price m the Waipa Plate. TT is common rumor that the Thespian A nag was better than Limeen (a Te Rapa winner), and if that is true then Trainer Bert Russell can be given credit of having had the "good thing" on his own. It was noticeable that the Wanganui lady owner, Mrs. S. L. Parsons, was on the spot to witness the victory of her Thespian colt, and it is stated that the right people held more than half the tickets on the winner, and it is further stated that m certain quarters there was good money for the winner. Wanganui, however, was not poulticed, one gent only laying a quid of the limit-payer. Young Sid. Gerrand was up from tjie south to steer Aspian, and that it could be summed up as something choice for a punt was proved by the colt winning .comfortably after being badly placed on No. 16 at the barrier. It took some doing to win from that position, and had Aspian drawn somewhere near the fence the race would probably have evolved into a procession.

As it was, there was only one m it the last little bit, and Bert •Russell's cupboard is not bare for the festive season.

The conditions of the race favor promising two-year-olds, but Toujours, a juvenile with previous placed form at Te Rapa, could finish no nearer than seventh. Russell's juvenile winner will probably be heard of again. It is nothing new for Bert's sister, Mrs. Parsons, to lift a big wad from the tote, for when Catonian captured the Trial Hurdles m her nomination at Ellerslie m the spring of 1929 the Wanganui lady helped her, self to something like £1200 by way 'of first dividend.
