DIVISIONS IN RAILWAY HANDICAP ?
(From "N.Z. Truth's" Special Auckland Representative.) Interest m connection with the Auckland Cup has advanced a stage with Wood? ville and Waipa over, and it is significant that the handicapper has decided not to penalize any of the Cup or Railway Handicap candidates which won at these fixtures. To attempt to sum up the actual acceptors m the Cup is no easy matter, but it seems fairly safe to conclude that Nightmarch, Star Stranger, Concentrate, In the Shade, Corinax, Paquito, Count Palatine, Cay Crest, Courageous, Count Cavour, My Own, and possibly Goshawk and Sargon will have, the first acceptance fee of 10 soys. paid for them , on Friday. , . •
CAMERON has both Goshawk and Hunting Cry engaged at '> time of writing, and if he is going to make a payment it is generally believed it will be for Goshawk; for he would prefer Roy Reed to ride Hunting. Cry, and with that horseman having tb steer Nightmarch it, looks like Hunting Cry for the 1 Railway. As for, Sarjgon, he has been troubled with soreness, and it remains to ' be eepn- how he will fare before the day. . At 1 present he is a frisky pro- i position. Voitre will be his horseman >f started. Nightmarch still has a big' army of admirers who believe m following a good horse despite his heavy impost, but general opinion seems to favor
Concentrate at a stone advantage, for the Trentham candidate is believed to he at his very best. Star Stranger is not without friends, while Paquito, by improving track doings at Riccarton, is coming into some favor.
v The Ellerslie candidate, Corinax, j is on the improve again, while In The Shade's victory at Waipa with sixteen pounds above his Cup weight is causing him to be nibbled at. The same remark applies -to Gay Crest, which won at Woodville m faster time than- In The Shade's tenfurlongaf, and when hampered with twenty-two pounds more than saddled with for Ellerslie. There was determination m ' Gay Crest's Woodville effort. Count Palatine's trainer is still hopeful of his horse seeing out two miles respectably, while My Own, by winning a Metropolitan, also comes into calculations as a hope. ! Fit and well, Sargon threatens to stay on for a week, but he is no certain starter as yet. The final summing up will be left till next issue, but undoubtedly Concentrate appears to be the ruling favorite at present. For the Railway there promises to be a very large acceptance list, but there is still a sweepstake of 10 soys. each io be** met on the day. Those mostly m favor at present ap- ; pear to be Chromadyne, Hunting Cry, Gesture, Karapoti, Toxeuma, Pegaway, Autopay and Supremacy, while Praise, White Wings, Great Star, Courtesy, Hunting Day, Paganelli and Sir Kay are all being supported. I It has been given out that Lady Quex will be at Awapuni m preference to Ellerslie, but she may go north for the concluding days. It is within the bounds of possibility that the number likely to go after the big sprint money will provide for [ a division, as -was the case when Rere- | moana and Lady. Cavendish won. a heat each for Oney Cox's Hawera stable m 1925. '*, j It looks like being one of the best' Railway fields for years ■ past, and
though the actual winner is well concealed, there was something impressive about the manner m which Hunt-
ing Cry, with 9.13, took his Woodville trick. He has filled out a good deal since last season, but was wearing bandages m front and may have to be l-isked on that account. Chromadyne and Karapoti will be the main northern hopes, but only one can win, and to win a Railway even the best sprinter m the land wants all the luck. It is mostly a case of securing a good position early, and being able | to hang on to it at top pressure all the way. That is why double punters are up against it more than ever this year, but to name three at present, Hunting Cry, Karapoti and Chromadyne are all' worthy of recommendation. All these have pace above the ordinary, and not one of them is. overburdened. .
