POLLOCK IS

SNAPPY

Defeats McDougal

For Place

DOUBLES CHANGE

(From "iV.Z. Truth's" Dunedin Rep.) JJAROLD POLLOCK, the young St. 1 * Kilda star, occasioned one of the biggest surprises Dunedin tennis has had this season' when he defeated McDougall for second place on tbe Qtago Association's ladder. Strangely enough, this pair met again last Saturday m the Uoslyn-St. Kilda match, and to prove the first Avin -was no nuke. Pollock again gained the decision. During the past few months. Pollock has improved out of all sight and m both the above-mentioned matches, he completely outplayed his opponent. His .driving, volleying and placements were excellent, and many of his recoveries were astounding. A feature of the match was the depth and accuracy of Pollock's driving. This young player intends competing-ln the NeAV Zealand championships atChristchurch at Christmas, and if he has any luck at all m the draw it will be no surprise to the writer if he does not cause one or two upsets. Another surprise Avas caused by Philhpps and Jensen when they defeated McDougall and Black for first place on the association's doubles ladder For quite a long time now the latter pair have held the first place, and at the beginning of the season there did not seem to be any chance of their being deposed Jensen and Phillips, however, have worked up a good combination, and this, combined with confidence m each other, enabled them to gain the decision. ' • M*he first . two sets were fairly evenly contested, but there was only one pair ln the final set, which Jensen and Phillips won to love. How well the winners were playing can be gauged from the fact that they won four of these games to love. It is pleasing to record that the standard of tennis m these ladder matches* has been much higher than for many years. Thc reason is primarily because of the better facilities for tennis being available to players at Logan Park. The formation of the United Club, to which nearly all the A grade players helong, has giA'en them the opportunity to meet on one common ground for practice, and the keenest players have been taking full advantage of this opportunity. Arrangements for the Otago Championships are well advanced, and given fine weather its success appears to be assured. Among the visitors from other centres will be Miss Nancy Fleming, from AVellington district, and Herbert Wilkinson, of Christohurch. Miss Pattlson, present Otago ladies' singles champion, is as yet a doubtful starter. She is suffering with a strained muscle m the leg. Should Miss Pattison not be fit to play, Miss Partridge should be the likely winner of the title. The men's singles should bo. a fairly open e\-ent, and any one of .Bray, McDougall, Guy and Pol.lick may have, his name engraved on thc singles cup for 3C31.
