CENTRE TOURNAMENT ENTRIES

Strong Rinks Are Down For Engagement (From "N.Z. Truth's" Special "Wellington Representative.)

AS a result of the second round played on Saturday for the senior pennant competition, the position has become more interesting. The two leading clubs, Lyall Bay and Hataitai, could not do better than secure a 50 per cent, and a 60 per cent win respectively, but are still at the top of the ladder with only a small margin separating them. Woburn, which occupied third place after the first round, had an equal number of wins and losses; but did not slip back to any appreciable extent. Newtown is generally m the fighting line, and has won the flag more often than any other club. It had a good day out, and made the best record for the round with a 75 per cent. win. It gave Kelburn a good drubbing by winning five games out of six; but Kelburn had its revenge on Karori by winning four to nothing. As far as the individual games were concerned, the real trial of strength was between Lyall Bay. and Hataitai, and honors were -even. Ardell beat Naylor, ' and Brackenridge defeated Brighting. Porteous, of Wellr ington, had to accept defeat at the hands of King, Victoria, and E. J. Hill was again beaten, this time by that stolid and careful player, Snaddon. There are still three more rounds of the senior pennant to play after the holidays are over. The proportionate sys-

tem under which the competition is played has been condemned for the reason that after the first round or two the winner is obvious. The result is still m doubt, but most bowlers will reckon that they can pick it m two. The entries for the Dominion and Centre Tournaments have closed, and it is pleasing to note 'that m the matter of numbers they are both satisfactory. The entries for the centre gathering are ahead of what they have been m recent years and an extra green will be required. * In addition to the teams already mentioned, one or two strike the eye as formidable. Hay-McKenzie, Marris, Smith and Lowry (Kelburn) is .a strong combination, and Ted Johnson, of the same club, also has a strong rink with Teddy Lomas as No. 3 again. Routley as No. 3 for Doherty, reads well, especially with Harry Williams as No. 2. Fielding, our representative at the Empire games, is not strongly supported, but the Ardell-Halliday combination should work well together. There is a noted entry from thc Wellington Club— Jack Roberts, Duncan, Victor Dimock and Ted Hill (skip). There is enough brains, skill and experience packed into the one rink to swamp the whole" jolly outfit.
