COLTS GET A
CHANCE
OTAGO'S OLD HANDS DROP OUT
LEMIN IS BOWLER
(From "N.Z. Truth's" Dunedin Rep.) WET weather m Dunedin saw senior cricket finish before full time. Carisbrook, against some good bowling by Dickinson, Alloo and Logan, of Old Boys, took all the afternoon to make 173 for seven. Roger Blunt contributed half this total, but was exceedingly lucky, having been dropped three times and caught off a no-ball. All his old gracefulness is still with him and a flashing cover drive was especially pleasing. The best innings, however, was played by Bush, who scored rapidly all round the wicket. Dickinson was m the best form he rias shown this season, and had Blunt m difficulties nore than once. The wicket was a ait too dead for him, but he was slinging them m m great style, pitching on the middle pin and going away several inches. Arthur Alloo, too. was exceedingly steady, bowling 27 overs- for 37 runs and getting 2 wickets, while Logan, though not getting a wicket, • was turning the ball well. Coupland was m good form with the ball for Dunedin against Albion, and Badcock, too, came to light, and Albion could only scrape together 145. Allen was the best for Albion,- and with Duncan helped the score along after several wickets had fallen cheaply. He batted very steadily. Dick White kept wickets well for Dunedin, stumping three men. Grange rattled Christian Brothers out for 112 and put on 78 for 2 themselves. Had it not been for Collett and Dawson, who put on 40 for their last wicket, the Brothers would have been m a hopeless position. v Lemin, Elmes and Chettleburgh all bowled well and the latter came to light as a batsman, into the bargain. With* McMullan, Gallant!, Shepherd, Dickinson and Coupland unavailable, Otago has been given the opportunity of playing some of. the colts who have been under Badcock's tuition. Of these, Elmes and Lemin have been bowling very steadily this season. The former, left-hand medium, can turn the ball well, and if he finds a length, Wellington batsmen will have to watch him. He has been batting with fair success. Lemin, medium-fast, right, can swing a bit. Moloney is easily the most improved player m Otago cricket, and has made consistently good scores this year. He bats brightly and has strokes all round the wicket, and if he gets going, will please everyone. He has more than a rough show of the trip Home ancl will be doing his best to impress the selectors. Smith, the ex-Geelong schoolboy, has not got going this year. The material is there, but faulty timing has usually proved his downfall. ■ It may be that the selectors rely on the "big time" to give him a start, since otherwise he has done little to justify his selection. "Truth" would prefer to see Blair of Christian Brothers given a chance. A. Knight, too, has done little worthy of note this season, but, like Cavanagh, usually comes to light m rep. cricket. Reg. Cherry is batting well, and can, if necessary, take a wicket occasionally. . Hawkesworth is m good form behind the stumps and will be well used to the bowling of Roger Blunt and Jock Dunning. Dunning will be out to impress the selectors, and Otago wishes him well. The team is completed by Badcock and Arthur Alloo. Arthur is, in great form with the ball this year, though he has not made many runs. His skill as captain is unimpaired, and despite the defection of many of the oldtimers, Otago should put up a creditable showing, and if the wicket is slow, may effect a surprise.
