BATSMEN'S DAY
Bowlers ' Averages
Slump
(From • "N.Z. Truth's" Palmerston North Rep.) THE initial club matches, of the season * resulted m first-innings victories to Old Boys and Palmdrston over High School and United, and m both these matches some of the batsmen returned excellent figures for their first visit to the crease. The top score of the day was made by L. Pacey, with 130 not out. His club mate and partner, O'Keefe, who assisted him to carry the tally from 4 to 280 for the second innings, also did well to knock up a brilliant 121 before being caught off Waldegrave's bowling by Lang. Spring, with 58 not out, was another useful bat, and thanks to the combined efforts of these three batsmen, Old Boys passed High School's first innings tally of 304 with the loss of but two wickets, ancl won decisively by eight wickets ancl 19 runs. In the other match the newly formed United Club, without the services of Gallichan, made 128 m their first Innings, and went under to Palmerston, who secured 306 for seven wickets. McVicar, who made the top score with 95, is a useful type of player, and though he usually has more success with the ball than with the bat, he can be relied upon to produce the runs when required, ancl was prevented from getting his century through playing Millen over-confl-dently, Day accepting a good catch to terminate his innings. Ingham (48) and the veteran, Trevena (44), were also instrumental m helping their side to victory. The least said about the bowlers' averages the better.
